European Parliament to visit Malta on the rule of law

This Thursday and Friday a special mission will head to Malta in order to inquire over recent revelations concerning the rule of law and money laundering in Malta following the murder of the journalist and blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia. This is the second mission to Malta following a first visit by the European Parliament’s inquiry committee after the Panama Papers.

MEP Sven Giegold, financial and economic policy spokesperson of the Greens/EFA group commented:

We have received numerous concrete hints by Maltese citizens and organisations concerning doubts over the good governance in Malta and welcome any additional substantive hints. I am grateful that the Maltese prime minister Muscat and many others will meet with our delegation. It will be interesting to discuss with Pilatus Bank which was in the centre of the findings of the Maltese anti-money laundering unit (FIAU). But, it is twofold disappointment that prime minister’s chief of staff Keith Schembri and Nexia BT have not confirmed their participation for the second time. Also Chief of Justice Silvio Camilleri has not yet confirmed to meet the delegation.
