Murder of journalists in Slovakia: European Union must protect investigative journalists

The murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his girlfriend Martina Kušnírová must be cleared up, cases of corruption must be investigated and the European Commission must provide financial support for investigative journalism. That is what the MEPs in their resolution called for and just adopted with a vast majority.

Sven Giegold, European Parliament rapporteur for transparency, integrity and accountability of the EU institutions, comments:

„The European Union cannot accept the murder of investigative journalists. It is shameful when journalists have to fear for their lives because they shed light on corruption, fraud and abuse of power. We need information on how EU subsidies have disappeared in organised crime. The Slovak police and judiciary must investigate and punish mafia dealings. Europol, the European Police Authority, must intervene and press for the full exchange of information.

Democracy needs investigative journalism. Journalists need protection and financial support. The European Union should set up a permanent fund to continue the courageous work of journalists such as Ján Kuciak and Daphne Caruana Galizia“.
